Symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy

Symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy (SLO)

What is SLO?

Symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy (SLO) is an immune-mediated condition that affects the nails of some Greyhounds and other breeds of dogs. It causes the nails to become brittle and weak and to slough off, which causes bleeding and leaves the sensitive nail bed tissues exposed. Its severity varies: some dogs will be minimally affected, while others will be sore and sensitive and require ongoing treatment to manage the condition.

What are the symptoms of SLO?

Symptoms of SLO can include:

  • progressive shedding of the nails over multiple weeks or  months
  • pain presenting as licking at the feet and/or lameness
  • redness and swelling the base of the nails
  • bleeding form the nail base

How is SLO treated?

Management involves medications that suppress the inappropriate immune response. These medications may be in the form of topical treatments (sprays or creams) or systemic treatments (tablets or capsules). Most dogs will require life-long treatment, although in some cases the condition will resolve after a single episode. In others, treatment is used when there is a flare up of symptoms and is not required in between. These medications are required to be prescribed by a veterinarian and regular check ups are advised to monitor your pet’s condition (every 6 months).
